Breffni Wheelers Cycling Club 2011

The Breffni Wheelers.

Cavan based cycling club, Breffni Wheelers are a developing club with a small active membership at the moment. We are more than a leisure club and have been known to take our cycling very seriously. We are looking for new members all the time, and would encourage you to consider joining the club regardless of your fitness or ability now – this will develop if you cycle with us regurlarly.

The club generally cycle regurlarly at the weekends on Saturday and Sunday mornings leaving the Orchard Pub in Drumalee Cross at 10.30 approximately. All cyclists are welcome to join us on condition you have a helmet.

The cycle route veries from week to week and can range from 30-100km depending on the composition of the group. There is a core group of cyclists who cycle regurlarly and have completed a range of sportives both in Ireland and in France. Two of the clubs members successfully completed the Etap de Tour in the French Alps this July, while another member completed the Iron Man Triathlon in Zurich in July. Other members have completed the an Post Tour of  Meath while some are training for the Sky Etap Hibernia in August.

The club has strong links with the Cavan Triathlon Club with whom we train from time to time.

Season Start

Breffni Wheelers back on the road.

The Cavan based cycling club, Breffni Wheelers, are calling on all memebers and those interested in joining the club to head to The Orchard Bar on Saturday mornings at 10.30am  and Sunday mornings at 10.30am. The Orchard has been the starting point for the last number of years and a group generally meet there each weekend. By arrangement the group occasionally start from a different location the details of which will be announced on the website in future.

Throughout the season members participate in the growing number of sportives held around the country, including the an Post Tours of Donegal, Clare, Meath and Waterford. A number of members are intending to participate in the Etap Hibernia in Clare in August. This Etap takes place on closed roads in Clare and is 100 miles or 160 kilometers around the beautiful countryside of Clare. It is a great opportunity to see this part of the country.

Every year so far The Wheelers have organised a Charity Cycle for a local charity. However because of organisational difficulties the Charity Cycle will not take place this year. We hope to organise such an event in 2012.

Membership of the club for 2011 is €40.00 until 31.12.2011, this includes membership to Cycling Ireland (provides insurance cover for cycling in Ireland).

Update 2011

On Wednesday 10th August we held our first time trial on the Cavan by-pass from Butlersbridge to the Dublin Road roundabout and return, a total of 17.17 kilometers. Seven brave cyclists took part in driving wind and rain. Every one finished the course with a sensse of excitment, exhaustion and exhiliration. Things can only get better next week as we hope to hold out second time trail at the same time and place. Please do come and join us – all cyclists are welcome on condition you wear a helmet. Safety is our priority. Congratulations to all participants and well done.

Five County Challenge.

The Five Counties Challenge is supported by Breffni Wheelers. Details of this cycling event will be announced shortly.
